This tour is based
on the best parts of two of our longer tours and stays in comfortable 2
and 3 star accomodation for cyclists wanting to experience some of the
South Island's best scenery from the seat of a bike.
Day 1
We shuttle out of town, past the Waipara vineyards, and cycle through dry
rolling east coast sheep country. We promise you will see sheep today,
lots and lots of them. After a 60km ride you deserve a well earned
rest as we transfer to Hanmer for the night.
Day 2 This
morning the beautiful beech forests of the Lewis Pass beckon. By minivan
we gradually climb to the top of Lewis, and then cycle 65km Lewis
Pass to Reefton for the night at the restored old Nurses Hostel.
Day 3
It's downhill all the way to first Inangahua Junction, then Westport, and
finally to Cape Foulwind for a night of local hospitality.
Day 4
Coastal views are one of the many highlights as we head south to the famous
Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, for lunch, and onward to Oak Lodge near Greymouth
for the night.
Day 5
Riding out of the Grey Valley we pass old coal mining towns before heading
east towards isolated Lake Brunner and Arthur's Pass. Today's ride
ends where our quiet back road meets the main road at Jacksons, then it
is up and over the hill to Christchurch. Our final dinner is in Christchurch,
back where we started. You will have challenged yourself, met new
friends, and along the way seen the real New Zealand, that's what it's
all about.
Day 6,
The tour finishes after breakfast. We can arrange transfers, or even another
tour!
